SMITH'S ILLUSTRATED ASTRONOMY

The full title of this book is Smit's Illustrated Astronomy, Designed for the Use of the Public or cCmmon Schools in the United States.  Illustrated with Numerous Original Diagrams.  The author is Asa Smith.  This copy is a second edition.  It was published in New York by Cady & Burgess in 1848.  It is a large book measauring 12" X 9 3/4".  It is an interesting early book on astronomy.  The book discusses 35 planets which were  known at the time.  these included the various moons which have been since identified as such.  It is a rare book and in good condition overall.  There is a water stain to the front cover and soiling to the front and rear covers.  There is some wear at the top and bottom of the spine..  An owner's name is neatly written in pen several times.  The bound pages are loose within the cover but are still bound tightly together.  There are lots of illustrations and the front cover pictures a wonderful old telescope.
